Creating Better Support for Children with Special Educational Needs in Kharkiv
Inclusive Resource Centres help children with special educational needs access education, while also helping communities build a more accessible and barrier-free environment.
Ukraine’s international partners, through the Partnership Fund for a Resilient Ukraine (PFRU), support initiatives that help communities maintain access to essential services even in wartime. Strengthening inclusive infrastructure is part of this effort, as it helps local education and support systems respond more effectively to the needs of children and their families.
That is why PFRU supported the establishment of Inclusive Resource Centre No. 3 in Kharkiv, providing the furniture and equipment needed for the delivery of services. This included multimedia equipment, interactive sensory modules, teaching materials, and other items essential for the centre’s full operation. Repair and restoration works were funded and carried out by Kharkiv City Council.
Inclusive Resource Centre No. 3 is a modern space where children with special educational needs aged 2 to 18 will be able to receive the support they need for learning and development. The new centre, covering 305 square metres, 14 functional rooms, as well as an accessible entrance and a shelter. Services will be delivered by psychologists, a special education teacher, a speech therapist, a rehabilitation specialist, and a therapeutic physical education teacher.
For many families, such centers are an important source of support. Here, specialists conduct comprehensive psychological and pedagogical assessments of children’s development, help identify their educational needs, and provide qualified support.
